Finally, Something New!

Flipper

If you read my posts about the geese then you will know that we had no idea if they were girls or boys. It is really hard to tell the difference, so they say. I guess you have to pretty much wait until they do boy things and girl things. Well, one of them has finally done something.

Buddy or I guess it's Buddie, has layed an EGG!

I've since learned that you can tell the difference by their voices too.
A gander has a really high pitched voice (definitely Flipper) and a goose has a lower voice (Buddie).

It was strange because when I went outside to feed and water yesterday Buddie's face had been pecked by one of the turkeys, her eye was bloody and her beak was too.

I think maybe she was trying to sit on her nest and lay the egg and the turkey kept bothering her and when Buddie wouldn't move it started pecking her. I was really mad at that turkey. I shooed it back to their side of the fence. If I could have caught it I would have thrown it back over the fence!

It's hard to see in the picture but she had scratched out a little nest in the flower bed next to the deck.

I found the egg yesterday and it helped renew my spirits. This snow and below freezing temps have really gotten me down. Everything concerning the flock is so much harder in the cold.

It doesn't look like much here but if you set it next to a chicken egg it looks really big.

And this first egg is is a small one compared to when she matures a little more.

I took a little video of the birds and all their morning noises. I'll try to upload it here.

I think it will work. Anyway, the video quality of my new camera is pretty bad. Sorry about the graininess. My old camera is much better. I guess I should of used my Flip Video camera but I was out there with my regular one and it is what it is.

Til next time,

Beth

Does the bump on Buddie's head mean she's a girl too? Or do all the geese of that variety have bumps?

Reagan was sitting by me while I watched your goose video and now he wants some geese. :-)

Hi there,

I found you through Cindee's Garden.

I have two geese (Hansel and Gretel) and thought they were a pair, but now I'm not so sure. I'm waiting to see if Gretel ever lays an egg, but as more time goes by I'm thinking they're both boys. I'd sure be happy to have some geese eggs to do some crafting with.

Beth,
This is Sherry, and I wanted to tell you how great your blog is. I have visited it before, just did not take the time to comment. You are absolutely living the life you were meant to. It would be fun to bring the grandbabies to visit some time. I am sure they would love the animals, but not sure the animals would love them..... Any way, please contact me at say5@earthlink.net so we can chat. Call me if my computer blocks you for whatever reason so I can get it figured out. Love, Sherry
